The Story

Ayani is a child of the parklands — born into a Cree community that lives by the river, the hunt, and the old knowledge. When a buffalo hunt goes wrong and her uncle's spirit is knocked loose from his body, a seven-year-old Ayani is pulled into the work of the camp's medicine woman to call him home. What begins as one desperate night becomes her calling. Twelve years later she is a hunter of a different kind — trained, scarred, and ready to face the things that hide in the shadow of the world.

Each chapter of the series takes Ayani to new land and new people, and each people carries its own mythology — its own beast, its own wound, its own way of healing. Medicine Women is a story about grief, responsibility, and the courage it takes to face what you cannot see.

The World

The series is rooted in the Aspen Parkland of the northern plains — birchbark canoes, buffalo jumps, ceremony tipis, and the medicine lodge where the line between the living and the spirit world grows thin. Cree language and worldview run through the story: the acâhk (spirit) that can wander loose, the miyw-manitow (good spirit) carried in a well-made stone, and the maci-manitowak (bad spirits) that hate it. The first antagonist is the Witiko — an ancient, starving thing of ice and rot that hunts spirits lost between worlds.

Characters

  • Ayani — the young Cree woman at the heart of the series, from a gifted child to a trained medicine woman and hunter.
  • Elara — the Maskihkiwiskêw (medicine woman) who takes Ayani in and teaches her to walk between worlds.
  • Kai (Nisikos) — Ayani's uncle and the hunter whose fate sets the story in motion.
  • Kohkom — her grandmother, keeper of the day-to-day knowledge of the camp.
  • Niba (Nimosôm) — her grandfather, who teaches her that a good stone "listens."

Episodes

Episode 1 — "Chipped Arrow"

A buffalo hunt, a tragedy, and the night a child first steps into the medicine lodge. The pilot establishes Ayani's world, the loss that shapes her, and the chipped arrowhead she will carry for the rest of her life.

Episode 2 — "The Shadow Hunt"

To bring a lost spirit home, Ayani must cross into the shadow parkland — a drained, frozen mirror of her own world — where something ancient catches the scent of a spirit out of its body. The hunt does not stay on the other side.
